Ferry Corsten, a powerhouse electronic dance music artist, began producing music in his mid-teens. By 1999, the then 27-year old, Rotterdam native had scored a top 20 hit, 'Out of the Blue', on the UK charts. Since then Corsten has easily evolved and matured into one of the most successful DJs of his genre: He’s been steadily ranked in the top 10 of DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs; nabbed over 10-gold certified singles on charts around the globe; and played sets at many of the most prestigious dance clubs and festivals worldwide. Corsten’s discography and collaborations have involved U2, Tiësto, Armand van Helden, The Killers, Moby, Faithless, BT, Nelly Furtado, Shiny Toy Guns, Armin van Buuren and Public Enemy.

2010 so far for Ferry Corsten can be characterized as very busy but at the same time but at the same time a really rewarding year as: the compilation 'Once Upon A Night', which will reach the second volume on October first, the successfully completing System F - 'Champions' - a project launched a remix contest in order to find new talented producers or the collaboration and his appearence on the latest Armin's album.

If you ask me which artists to whom I remain stuck without words, Ferry Corsten is one of them.... His music speaks about the artist more than any biography or interview with him. A tought mission for me... Ferry Corsten interview exclusively for trancearena.ro!

TA: Hello, Ferry! We thank you giving us of your time chatting with trancearena and your fans. We’ve just “caught” you before releasing your album “Once Upon A Night. Vol. 2” starting a prolonged tour in the USA presenting this new edition of 'Once Upon A Night'! Hey, Ferry, how are the things going?

F.C.: As you mentioned, I am pretty busy with the tour and of course the compilation is about to released. Lately, I’ve been spending as much time in the studio to produce my new artist album.

TA: 'Once Upon A Night' stands a new stage in your artistic evolution and also a new concept of world-tour (OUAN: The Experience), having the first volume already released and with a second one planned to be released on October the 1st 2010. How did you manage to do all these so quickly and of course as well as you?

F.C.: To be honest I didn’t really plan to do the follow up of volume 1 so soon. But we got in a lot of good tracks after release the first one, we decided to release another one in a time span of only six months. Some say it a record breaking achievement to release volume 2 so soon after the first one. But I haven’t looked that up


TA: OUAN - it is not just an ordinary compilation- this is the new artists’ compilation with pieces that have not been released yet, but they are really outstanding! Can you describe the collaboration process between you and the artists that have produced for your compilation?

Ferry Corsten: For some tracks we did a bit of A&R so the producers could fine-tune the productions so we could use it one volume 2. But most of the tracks were completely fine when they were sent to us. The tracks have to have the 'Once Upon A Night' sound.


Trancearena: 4. How difficult it was for you to choose those 26 tracks on “Once Upon A Night. Vol. 2”? How many tracks have you listened for this album?

F.C.: We listened to over a couple of hundred tracks and that was just the pre-selection. I had more tracks when I started mixing but these 26 just made the whole story just the way I wanted to tell it.


TA: Your new project Pulse is on OUAN 2, too. “Once” sounds extraordinary! Are we going listen to another production with this title (as it happened with “Rendition”)? Is there any connection with your next album?

F.C.: On volume 2 there is a track that I did under my Pulse guise too, it’s called Festival. There isn’t really a connection with my next album regarding Pulse, but who knows, maybe some tracks will end up there that were produced under my Pulse guise.


TA: Will we keep to use the adjectives of the first OUAN edition? Will the second album be better?

F.C.: Difficult to say. What I can tell you that we have 26 exclusive tracks on the compilation and that it takes volume 1 into the extremes. So more housey to start with and more trancey at the end. Personally, I found it very hard to top the first compilation, but listening to the second compilation, I am very happy with the result myself.


TA: What was the source of your inspiration when you choose the title of this compilation?

F.C.: The CD has been compiled like a good night out. You start the night laid back and finish it with a bang. Like any good party night should be. The club tour and The Experience are all about that. We give the crowd a perfect night out. Every night starts like a fairytale.... Once Upon A Night......


TA: You are characterized by a unique and unmistakable sound on trance scene. Your artist album planned for the next year is going to keep this special sound or, it will be something new? Who do you collaborate for this new album with?

F.C.: I cannot tell you anything about the collaborations yet unfortunately. My last album Twice In A Blue Moon was more back to basics. Back to the trance sound. For this album, I don’t know where it’ll take me. I’ve never been afraid of experimenting with my own sound as you might know. So let see what comes out.


TA: You have a constant rhythm of production: the compilation of this year, the album in 2011… Are you “preparing” something else? What plans do you have?

F.C.: Right now all my time goes into touring and producing my next artist album. So that’s about it for now.


TA: This year we were deprived of Full On Ferry! Will it return next year or….?

F.C.: Never say never. Don’t know yet so can’t tell anything about it.


TA: A lot of parties in the USA... You also start your tour for OUAN 2 with a mega-one in States. Gigs in the USA - this is the trend of first class DJs - why America? How do you find the trance scene and trance public there?

F.C.: In America the dance scene is still a bit underground, same goes for the trance scene. Don’t forget there a couple of 100 million people living there so it’s a huge country with a lot of party people.


TA: You probably have mixed and performed in when you were not in your best moods. What does it impress you in such moments? Does an enthusiastic public with which you establish a rapid connection help you? How does it is seen or felt from the mixing table?

F.C.: When I am a bit tired or something like that, it always disappears when I put on the first record and see the people react to this and go crazy. Their vibe really helps me enjoy the evening so much more!


TA: We keep the gigs’ atmosphere and we move a little bit in the East of the Europe. You were in Romania, more than once; tell us, which are your feelings, thoughts and opinions about the trance scene and trance public from Romania? Did you communicate well with the public? Did the public from here help you ?

F.C.: I had an amazing time in Romania. It was a great crowd! Even if I didn’t speak the language, I could communicate through my music and it seemed that the crowd understood me too. Music. Is at the end a universal language.


TA: It is obvious that you are working very hard. How do you share your time with your family- another “domain” where you are fulfilled? Do you consider that celebrity sometimes represent a disadvantage?

F.C.: In Holland people are really down to earth. I get recognized when I am walking through town and sometimes give autographs are have my picture taken, but that’s about it. Regarding my family time. I have a little daughter of 2 so she gets all my spare time when I am not touring or in the studio


TA: There are some rumours about a Ferry Corsten chill out album. Are they real?

F.C.: My label, Flashover Recordings has a chill out album called , “Mute Your Mind”. It’s a great album with amazing chilled out stuff. Love listening to that at home.


TA: Tell us more about your collaboration (Minack) on the last album of Armin van Buuren.

F.C.: Armin asked me to do a track for his new album. So sat in his studio and we produced Minack. I am happy with the result and I like to play it in my set. The crowd’s reaction is great.


TA: Corsten’s Countdown 200? Do you plan something special for this? Can you share us some of your ideas?

F.C.: We’re thinking of some ideas but nothing has been decided yet.

TA: After Subculture, Future Sound of Egypt Recordings, Vandit and recently Perfecto Records collaboration do we have to wait a new one with Armada Music from Flashover Recordings label? Or it will remain on PREMIER- the collaboration part with Black Hole Recordings?

F.C.: No we’ll always be our own record company. PREMIER is a joint-venture for our albums and crossover releases but we are separate record companies and will be.


TA: The remixes competition “The Champions” - System F, Once Upon A Night - new artists compilation, Corsten’s Countdown radio show…through all these you support and discover new talented names! What young producers do you appreciate? What names do you see right at the top after few years?

F.C.: On this album we have another track of Yuri Kane, he’s a great producer. On volume 2 we have again, a lot of new producers. So let ‘s see how they develop. Another producer I want to mention is Arty. His star is rising fast.


TA: You are original and distinct on trance scene and you have a constant rhythm of production, and these will always keep you in the spots light, putting you upon a pedestal in front of your fans, not letting the celebrity to stay on your way. What combination of things, feelings and facts do inspire you? Where do the inspiration and the power to keep you so high on the top, among the best artists, come from?

F.C.: I try to be original every time. That’s probably what keeps me going for a long time. I still get a kick out of producing a new track. Inspiration comes from everywhere. I hear something or sit down in the studio and start with a melody. Never know where it takes me but I feel that I made something fresh.


TA: Have you suffered watching the final of 2010 FIFA World Cup? Ha! Ha! Ha! During this championship we all reached to support the “Mechanic Orange” team, and that thanked to you- DJs from Holland. And that make us wonder: Why does Holland have the most trance DJs and producers?

F.C.: Unfortunately, I was all the way in America watching the show and had to rush from the airport to catch it! Of course I did suffer from the lost final. But I didn’t lie awake at night , there were loads of people waiting for me to play after so I couldn’t dwell on the loss!The music scene has always been big in the Netherlands.


TA: DJ Mag Top 100 is important for an artist’s future, but this survey does really reflect the true value of an artist?

F.C.: It’s always good to be recognized for you what you do. But , it may not necessary reflect the value of an artist. Your favourite DJ is a personal one, it can also be based on mixing styles, genre, even looks!

Ferry Corsten, un centru al puterii in muzica dance electronica si unul din pionierii scenei trance, a inceput sa produca muzica la mijlocul adolescentei. In 1999, la 27 de ani, baiatul din Rotterdam a marcat in topurile din Marea Brutanie cu 'Out Of The Blue'. De atunci, Ferry Corsten a evoluat si s-a maturizat cu usurinta pe scena EDM, ajungand unul dintre cei mai de succes dj ai genului: s-a clasat constant in top 10 DJ Mag Top 100, a primit peste 10 discuri de aur pentru single-urile sale intrate in topurile din intreaga lume si a mixat la multe dintre cele mai prestigioase cluburi si festivaluri din lume. Artist in toata puterea cuvantului, Ferry Corsten dovedeste in orice actiune contributia sa remarcabila la cultura muzicii dance electronice. 2010 este in prezent pentru Ferry Corsten un an foarte incarcat, dar in acelasi timp, plin de satisfactii: compilatia 'Once Upon A Night', care va ajunge la al doilea volum pe 01 octombrie, finalizarea cu succes System F - 'Champions' - un proiect ce a lansat un concurs de remix-uri cu scopul de-a descoperi noi producatori talentati sau colaborarea si aparitia sa pe ultimul album al lui Armin van Buuren.

Daca m-ai intreba in fata caror artisti as ramane blocata si fara cuvinte, unul dintre acestia este Ferry Corsten... Muzica lui vorbeste despre artist mai mult decat orice biografie sau interviu cu acesta. O misiune grea pentru mine... Un interviu Ferry Corsten in exclusivitate pentru trancearena.ro!

TA: Buna Ferry! Multumim ca ne-ai oferit din timpul tau pentru a vorbi cu Trancearena si fanii tai! Te-am prins cu putin timp inainte de lansarea celui de-al doilea volum Once Upon A Night, premiera acestuia de la The Gallery si plecarea ta intr-un turneu prelungit in SUA pentru sustinerea acestei noi editii Once Upon A Night! Hei Ferry, cum merge?

F.C.: Asa cum ai mentionat, sunt destul de ocupat cu turneul si, desigur, cu apropiata lansare a compilatiei. De asemenea, în ultima vreme am petrecut mult timp în studio pentru producerea noului meu album de artist.


TA: Once Upon A Night marcheaza o alta etapa in evolutia ta ca artist si un nou concept de turneu international (OUAN: The Experience), cu primul volum deja lansat si cu un al doilea planificat pentru lansare pe 01 octombrie 2010. Cum ai reusit atat de repede si, cu siguranta, la fel de bine?

F.C.: Sincer, nu am intentionat sa realizez continuarea primului volumul atât de repede. Dar am strâns atât de multe piese bune dupa lansarea primului volum, încât ne-am hotarât sa lansam altul la o distanta de doar sase luni. Unii spun ca lansarea volumului 2, la un timp atât de scurt dupa primul, reprezinta un record. Dar nu am urmarit asta în special!


TA: OUAN nu este o compilatie obisnuita - aceasta este compilatia noilor artisti cu piese inca nelansate cu adevarat exceptionale! Descrie procesul de colaborare cu artistii care au produs pentru compilatia ta!

F.C.: Pentru unele piese noi am aplicat putin A&R pentru ca producatorii nostrii sa poata regla fin productiile, astfel încât sa le putem folosi în volumul 2. Dar multe dintre piese erau complet finisate când ne-au fost trimise. Piesele trebuiau sa aiba sound-ul 'Once Upon A Night'.


TA: Cat de greu a fost sa alegi cele 26 de piese de pe Once Upon A Night, Vol. 2? Cate piese ai ascultat pentru acest volum?

F.C.: Noi am ascultat peste câteva sute de piese doar pentru preselectie. Am avut mai multe piese alese când am inceput sa mixez, dar aceste 26 au reusit sa creeze întreaga poveste, în felul în care am vrut sa v-o prezint.


TA: Noul tau proiect Pulse este prezent si pe OUAN 2. 'Once' suna extraordinar! Vom mai auzi alte productii sub acest nume (cum a fost cazul Rendition)? Vreo legatura cu viitorul tau album?

F.C.: Pe volumul 2 se afla o piesa, numita Festival, pe care am realizat-o sub influenta proiectului Pulse. Nu exista o legatura, în adevaratul sens al cuvântului, în ceea ce priveste albumul meu si proiectul dar, cine stie, poate, unele piese care se vor regasi acolo vor fi produse sub influenta proiectului Pulse.


TA: Vom pastra adjectivele primei editii OUAN? Va fi mai bun al doilea volum?

F.C.: E dificil de raspuns. Ceea ce va pot spune este ca avem pe compilatie 26 de piese de calitate superioara, iar acest fapt duce volumul 1 la extreme. Mult house la început si mai mult trance la sfârsit. Personal, mi-a fost foarte greu sa depasesc prima compilatie, dar ascultarea celei de-a doua m-a determinat sa ma declar foarte multumit de rezultat.


TA: Ce te-a inspirat cand ai ales titlul pentru aceasta compilatie?

F.C.: CD-ul a fost compilat asemena unei nopti bune petrecuta în oras. Începi noaptea bine si o închei cu o mare explozie. Asa cum ar trebui sa fie orice petrecere reusita. Turneul de cluburi si The Experience exprima acelasi lucru. Oferim multimii o noapte perfecta. Fiecare seara incepe ca un basm...A fost odata o noapte...


TA: Iti este caracteristic un sound unic si inconfundabil pe scena trance. Albumul de artist planificat pentru anul viitor pastreaza acest sound sau va fi ceva nou? Cu cine colaborezi pentru acest album?

F.C.: Din pacate, înca nu va pot spune nimic despre colaborarile mele. Ultimul meu album 'Twice In A Blue Moon' a fost mai mult o întoarcere la origini. Înapoi spre sound-ul trance. In ceea ce priveste acest nou album, nu stiu unde ma va duce. Asa cum stiti, nu mi-a fost nicicând teama sa-mi experimentez propriul sound. Deci, sa vedem ce mai apare!


TA: Ai un ritm constant de productie: compilatia din acest an, albumul din 2011.... Mai pregatesti si altceva? Ce planuri ai?

F.C.: În acest moment îmi petrec tot timpul între turneu si producerea noului meu album de artist. Cam atât pentru moment.


TA: Anul acesta ne-ai privat de Full On Ferry! Revine anul viitor sau...?

F.C.: Niciodata sa nu spui niciodata. Înca nu stiu, asa ca nu va pot spune nimic despre aceasta.


TA: Multe petreceri in SUA. De altfel iti incepi turneul pentru OUAN 2 cu un mega tur in State. Gig-uri in SUA - tendinta multor dj din linia intai - de ce America? Cum gasesti publicul si scena trance de-acolo?

F.C.: In America scena dance este înca putin underground si acelasi lucru se întâmpla si cu scena trance. Nu uitati ca aici traiesc câteva sute de milioane de oameni, astfel ca este o tara uriasa, cu o multime de oameni carora le place sa petreaca.


TA; Probabil ai mixat si in seri cu o stare nu tocmai potrivita! Ce te misca cel mai tare in astfel de nopti? Un public entuziasmat si cu care intri rapid in conexiune te ajuta? Cum se vede/se simte asta de la pupitru?

F.C.: Când sunt putin obosit sau ceva de genul acesta, starea de disconfort dispare imediat ce pun primul disc si vad oamenii reactionând la acesta si distrându-se. Vibratiile lor ma ajuta cu adevarat sa-mi înveselesc seara sau chiar mai mult!


TA: Pastram atmosfera gig-urilor si ne mutam putin in Europa de Est. Nu o data ai ajuns in Romania; spune-ne care este sentimentul, ce crezi despre scena si publicul trance din Romania? Ai comunicat bine cu publicul? Te-a ajutat publicul de aici?

F.C.: Am petrecut uimitor în România. Ati fost un public minunat. Chiar daca eu nu v-am putut vorbi limba, am putut comunica prin muzica mea si se pare ca si publicul m-a înteles. Muzica este, în cele din urma, un limbaj universal.


TA: Este evident ca muncesti foarte mult. Cum iti imparti timpul cu familia, unde si aici te-ai implinit? Reprezinta uneori celebritatea un dezavantaj?

F.C.: În Olanda, oamenii sunt pragmatici, cu picioarele pe pamânt. Sunt recunoscut când ma plimb prin oras si, uneori, acord autografe sau ma las fotografiat, dar, doar atât. În ceea ce priveste timpul petrecut cu familia, am o fiica cu vârsta de 2 ani, astfel ca ei îi acord tot timpul meu liber, atunci când nu sunt în turneu sau în studio.


TA: Se zvoneste despre un album chill out Ferry Corsten. Este adevarat?

F.C.: Label-ul meu - Flashover Recordings are lansat un album chill out, intitulat 'Mute Your Mind'. Este un album minunat cu piese chill out uimitoare. Imi place sa-l ascult acasa.


TA: Despre aparitia si colaborarea ta ('Minack') pe ultimul album al lui Armin van Buuren.

F.C.: Armin mi-a cerut sa realizez o piesa pentru noul sau album. Asa ca ne-am pus pe treaba în studioul sau si am produs 'Minack'. Sunt multumit de rezultat si-mi place s-o interpretez. Reactia publicului este minunata.


TA: Corsten's Countdown 200? Planuiesti ceva special pentru acesta? Ceva idei?

F.C.: Avem în vedere câteva idei, dar nu s-a decis nimic deocamdata.


TA: Dupa Subculture, Vandit ... si, mai nou, Perfecto Records sa ne asteptam la o astfel de colaborare cu Armada Music din partea label-ului Flashover Recordings? Sau va ramane pe PREMIER - partea de colaborare cu Black Hole Recordings?

F.C.: Nu, noi întotdeauna vom fi propria noastra casa de discuri. Cu PREMIER colaboram pentru albumele noastre si lansari încrucisate, dar suntem case de discuri separate si asa vom ramâne.


TA: Competitia de remix-uri 'The Champions' - System F, 'Once Upon A Night' - compilatia noilor artisti, emisiunea Corsten's Countdown... prin toate astea sprijini si descoperi nume noi talentate! Ce tineri producatori apreciezi? Ce nume vezi sus de tot peste cativa ani?

F.C.: Pe acest album avem o noua piesa Yuri Kane, un producator minunat. Pe volumul 2 avem, iarasi, multi noi producatori. Sa-i urmarim cum evolueaza. Un alt producator pe care as dori sa-l mentionez este Arty. Steaua sa se înalta rapid.


TA: Esti original si diferit pe scena trance si cu un ritm constant de productie, iar asta te tine mereu in lumina reflectoarelor si te aseaza pe un piedestal in fata fanilor tai, fara ca celebriattea sa te opreasca din drumul tau! Ce combinatie de lucruri de inspira? De unde vine atat de multa inspiratie si forta sa te pastrezi acolo sus printre cei mai buni?

F.C.: Încerc sa fiu original de fiecare data. Acesta este motivul care ma ajuta sa continui. Înca doresc sa produc o noua piesa. Ma inspir din orice. Aud ceva sau ma asez în studio si încep cu o linie melodica. Niciodata nu stiu unde voi ajunge, dar simt ca am creat ceva proaspat, nou.


TA: Ai suferit la finala Campionatului Mondial de Fotbal? HaHa In acea perioada, toti am ajuns sa sustinem Portocala Mecanica, datorita voua - dj-lor din Olanda. Si asta ma face sa te intreb de ce crezi ca Olanda are cei mai multi dj si producatori trance?

F.C.: Din nefericire, calatoream prin America urmarind spectacolul fotbalistic, si a trebuit sa parasesc aeroportul în graba pentru a prinde difuzarea meciului. Desigur ca înfrângerea din finala m-a facut sa sufar. Dar nu am stat treaz sa sufar toata noaptea, o multime de oameni ma astepta sa cânt , astfel ca nu am putut jeli înfrângerea! Scena muzicala a fos mereu mare în Olanda.


TA: Dj Mag Top 100 este important pentru viitorul unui artist, dar sa fie acest sondaj cel care oglindeste adevarata valoare?

F.C.: Întotdeauna este bine sa-ti fie recunoscute meritele. Dar se poate ca o clasificare sa nu reflecteze în mod obligatoriu valoarea unui artist. Alegerea DJ-ul preferat este personala, subiectiva, si poate fi bazata, de asemenea, pe stilurile de mix, gen muzical si chiar înfatisare!
